A second characteristic of my work when I am mandated to cover a birthday party is to make myself invisible. This is not the fact that I want to be invisible, no, but the fact that the guests forget about me allows very often to take more natural pictures, with people not posing, but living the moment.
In order to achieve this, I often use light equipment which is easily adaptable in all circumstances. My greatest satisfaction is, when looking at the proposed pictures, people tell me that they don’t remember seeing me at that very moment.

What do the people who have organised and lived a birthday party, want to remember? On the one hand, they want to live again the intense emotional moments, such as when an emotional mother is making her not less emotional speech or when the birthday girl or boy has had the worst difficulties to blow off all the candles of her/his birthday cake ; on the other hand, they want to have memories of the key encounters of the party.
When I take part to one of these birthday parties as a professional photographer, I always take care to understand the key moments of this party, and I also take time to observe the groups of people gathering together and from which there is a special atmosphere coming out. Then, it is only a question of being in the right place at the right moment, and between those key moments, asking the various groups if they would be happy for me to immortalise their encounter.
